Nomenclature/Definitions

Language choices:

In this project, we use the term “disabled students.” Language surrounding disability is a personal preference. Some individuals prefer to be referred to using person-first language i.e. a person with disabilities, while others prefer identity-first language i.e. a disabled person. We have opted to use identity-first language because it is more in line with the social model of disability, which holds that individuals living with impairments are not inherently disabled, rather they become so as a result of systemic barriers, ableist social structures, inaccessible built environments, and a lack of resources. However, we also respect each individual’s language preferences in terms of their own identity.
